Guess This Puts A Crimp In GSN's Plans
« on: September 15, 2003, 05:07:20 PM »
For my long awaited 100th post, I will take the opportunity to break some news.  While the news itself is not on-topic, it does affect a certain network and their scheduled 10/1 program.  And heeeeeere we go:

Injunction Awarded Against California Recall

And you can best believe that as I write this, Rich Cronin, Bob Boden and Mark Cronin are discussing their options.  If the election is postponed until March, everything's off and they'll have to start all over in the spring (if they even want to).  If it's only postponed for a few weeks, as soon as they check with the contestants, they'll probably reschedule for the Wednesday before the new date.

If this was a movie, no one would believe any of this.

Saw a promo last night for it, though. I'll keep an eye out the next couple of days and see if they get pulled.

The story about the injunction broke within the last couple of hours (as I type).  We'll see if the promos continue to run tonight.

I think it would be SO funny if this thing had to be cancelled before it ever happened.... :-)

Thanks for the info, Doug.

There's no real reason for GSN to pull their special.  The six candidate-contestants are still candidates whether the election is held a few days after the GSN special or a few months.    If anything, a delay would give them more opportunity for replays.

Allow me to respectfully disagree.  If the recall is moved to six months from now, while the platforms of the candidates may not change, some of the issues or news events could conceivably change that could affect the content of the show.  Suppose that the main topic of conversation throughout the whole show is Ah-nold, and in the ensuing months Ah-nold has to drop out (some Clintonesque skeleton is found).  Or one of the six candidates who actually attended the taping drops out.  GSN would look rather silly airing a show trying to capitalize on current events that was \"obviously\" taped much earlier (as opposed to airing a week of FF reruns that originally aired at Xmas time on the 4th of July).

OK, now tell me why I'm an ignorant slut.  :)

We may not be talking about the same things.

I'm saying go ahead GSN, tape the special and air the special on October 1st like you were planning all along.  It doesn't make any difference whether the actual election happens that week or months from now.   You've gotten your publicity mileage out of it, and your winner now has some more time to figure out what to do with the \"campaign contrbution\".

Yes, months from now, replays may appear a little dated if things have dramatically changed.  So, OK, if you were disagreeing only on the narrow point of the replay value, I guess I can see that.  So instead of replays,  here's a better idea.  If the thing's a hit (and the publicity alone should bode well for it), do a sequel in March!

That \"Silly\" factor is the reason why most of the run of Challengers won't probably be seen in reruns(the show had that day's date on a monitor behind DIck's run for all but a few weeks of the run)

I kinda feel like it doesn't matter if GSN actually DOES this show or not; they've gotten tons of good publicity just from the announcement of the special, and I think if they just dropped the project it wouldn't hurt them a bit.

I'm probably wrong.

There'd be no return on the investment. I'm sure some ad inventory has already been sold for the time slot carved out for the special and I'm sure a set is being designed and built. It's probably not an expensive show to make, so I'm sure it'll be a moneymaker for GSN, as well as a way of saying to the public that GSN is about now just about game shows, but about shows about games (especially the big game in California, the run for the power in Sacramento)

There's just no reason not to do it now.

As for the idea of it looking silly running 6 months from now, I'm sure it'll look silly when they tape the darn thing. It's not being done for C-SPAN. It's meant to be silly. The whole casting of the show screams that. The whole venue for the show screams that.

Look on the bright side, it'll be over before you know it. Take a deep breath, it'll only sting for a minute.

While I appreciate the idea that GSN needs to make contingency plans, I'm not holding by breath on that decision standing.  This is the ninth circuit, after all.  These are the guys that the activist judges run away from because they think they're weirdos.

They had 6 unanimous reversals against them last term.  This won't be unanimous, but it will be sent back down in a hurry.

In Bush v. Gore, there was a state-mandated recount taking place, instead of the voting and earlier recounts, which were done county-by-county, as California's gubernatorial recall will be counted.  What's more, understand that this decision could kill every upcoming election in the country.

Consider: In the state in which you live, does every county or parish use the same system for casting and tabulating ballots?  If not, then upholding this decision would have the national effect of mandating that every ballot in your state be cast the exact same way, regardless of cost and practicality, because it follows that any given balloting system is going to have its own built-in errors, and as such, using two different methods in any election will disenfranchise some of the voters.

Can you imagine the losers of every statewide election in every state saying, \"My voters were disenfranchised\" and having this decision and a subsequent refusal by the SC to back them up?  Chaos.

In short, well, I want some of what the justices involved in the injunction were smoking.

One side thing I'm curious about.  What will Peter Uberroth think, when he quit last week because \"there wasn't enough time to make up ground\" and they're now trying to push the election back another four months.
